I’m Svala Magnea Ásdísardóttir, founder of VARP Nordic Studio.I grew up in both Iceland and Sweden and am bilingual in Icelandic and Swedish, with professional fluency in English. Living between two countries, languages and cultures has given me an understanding of language that goes far beyond vocabulary and grammar.My professional life has followed that same path. I have worked across teaching, translation, interpreting, journalism, writing and intercultural communication.
I work as a mother-tongue teacher of Icelandic and have several years of experience teaching in Swedish schools, alongside privately teaching Icelandic to children, young people and adults.As a journalist and language professional, I have also worked with everything from translation and interpreting to transcription, research, editing and storytelling.For me, language carries identity, memory, humour, history and belonging. It can reconnect someone with their roots, give a young person confidence in their heritage language, allow two people to understand one another, or open the door to an entirely new culture.VARP grew naturally from all these parts of my life; my languages, my professional experience, my curiosity about people and cultures, and my belief in the power of genuine communication.For me, language has always been about connection. VARP is where those connections come together.
